Colorful, like the carnival in Rio

This year's cover image wonderfully illustrates just how “colorful” classical philately can be. No fewer than six different issues were used for this Chargé franking. This alone makes it an exceptionally rare item. To date, we know of two seven-color frankings and probably three six-color frankings from the Seated Helvetia series. They are undoubtedly among the rarest items from this period. The fact that the conscientious postal official, equipped with a healthy dose of professional pride, took the time on August 17, 1880, in Bern to neatly cancel each of the six stamps, delights us all the more today. This rarity is also a feast for the eyes!

Last but not least, this magnificent franking was sent to Brazil. First, however, it traveled to England. From there, it crossed the Atlantic by steamship. Despite the undoubtedly arduous journey to Brazil (according to Richard Schäfer's handbook “Der Briefpostverkehr Schweiz- Ausland” (Letter Mail Traffic between Switzerland and Other Countries), the journey to Rio took 29 days and a few hours), the document survived the ordeal exceptionally well. Even after almost 150 years, it continues to shine brightly and will remain a highlight in many collections in the future. Postal history is incredibly exciting and, as we can see, it can also be fantastically beautiful!
